From what was once considered a crazy idea, a donkey farm has become a symbol of passion and sustainability. Just a few kilometers from the historic Rocca di Canossa, Montebaducco offers a unique experience blending biodiversity and culinary tradition.
An ambitious dream, born from the passion and determination of one man, has managed to defy every prejudice and overcome general skepticism. Viewed by many as a foolish and unachievable idea, this project has transformed into the largest donkey farm in Europe—a one-of-a-kind place. Just a few kilometers from Reggio Emilia, this extraordinary reality is the result of unwavering tenacity and a rare ability to see beyond, to imagine the possible where others saw only limits. This is Montebaducco, and this is the beautiful story of Giuseppe.
A Dream Born from Childhood
Giuseppe Borghi, born in 1946, has always had a special connection with donkeys, which began in his childhood when he spent his days with his beloved donkey, Gina. While everyone else adapted to technological and agricultural progress—with tractors replacing animals—Giuseppe could not forget that unique bond with his special animal. So, after years of working as a blacksmith, in 1996 he decided to turn his passion into an ambitious project: to create a donkey farm in Montebaducco, in the Quattro Castella area. What seemed like madness has transformed into a successful enterprise that today counts around 800 animals belonging to 13 different breeds, including some of the rarest in the world, such as the Romagnolo, the Irish Spotted, the Egyptian White, and the Martina Franca.

An Oasis of Biodiversity in the Heart of Emilia
The Montebaducco farm is not just a refuge for donkeys, but a true center for biodiversity conservation. The 13 breeds raised on the farm, including the rare French Poitou and the Amiatino, are carefully protected, contributing to the preservation of the genetic heritage of these species, many of which are at risk of extinction.
Each donkey is raised with respect for animal welfare, in spacious green areas and fed with organic forage cultivated directly on the farm, following certified organic farming methods. This focus on sustainability makes the donkey milk produced here a true gem, used both for cosmetics and organic foods. Giuseppe’s company is indeed ICEA certified, a guarantee of quality and respect for the environment.
Meeting with Pope Francis
The culmination of this extraordinary story came in 2015 when Giuseppe Borghi received a special invitation: to deliver two of his donkeys, Fiocco and Fiore, to Pope Francis. The meeting was a memorable moment for both Giuseppe and his family. Pope Francis, a great lover of animals, could only appreciate this special gift, recognizing the value that donkeys have held throughout history, representing symbols of labor, patience, and perseverance.

An Agriturismo that Celebrates Nature
Montebaducco is not only synonymous with farming but also with hospitality and tradition, offering visitors a complete experience thanks to its agriturismo set in a rural oasis in the heart of the Reggian hills in Quattro Castella. In this enchanting landscape, characterized by gentle slopes and green expanses, stands an ancient farmhouse that was once a convent from the 1600s. Carefully restored, it has retained the charm of its era: stone walls, terracotta floors, and wooden beams evoke the warmth and aromas of tradition.
The agriturismo welcomes its guests with five rooms, including a spacious one designed for groups, all immersed in the tranquility of the hills. The rooms are comfortable and inviting, offering a relaxing atmosphere ideal for enjoying a comfortable and soothing stay, perfectly integrated into the historical charm of the farmhouse.
In the agriturismo’s restaurant, chef Matilde skillfully prepares traditional Emilian dishes, offering a culinary journey through authentic flavors. Local cured meats and cheeses stand out among the appetizers, accompanied by traditional gnocco fritto and the must-have erbazzone. The first courses celebrate handmade pasta, featuring specialties like cappelletti, tortelli, gnocchi, and tagliatelle, while the second courses offer a selection of assorted roasts. Everything is complemented by homemade cakes to conclude the meal on a sweet note.
To complete this culinary experience, guests can taste Lambrusco Reggiano, a symbol of the region, with its lively and pleasant character representing a true pride of the Reggian land.
This establishment is not just a landmark for nature lovers but also a perfect place for families and school groups, where they can discover the world of donkeys and learn the importance of respecting animals and the environment. Giuseppe’s son, Davide, proudly continues the family business, contributing to the growth and innovation of the company with the same passion that motivated his father.

Donkeys: Faithful and Tireless Companions
At Montebaducco, donkeys are not just farm animals but companions in life. Their versatility makes them perfect for various purposes: from trekking to assisted therapy (donkey therapy), from pasture cleaning to protecting sheep and goats from predators. Not surprisingly, Giuseppe says, “If you find a donkey, you find a treasure.”
The donkeys raised here are robust, with a sweet and patient character, making them ideal as companion animals. They can live up to 40 years if properly cared for, and due to their intelligence, they are particularly appreciated for their affection and loyalty. The farm sells about 300 donkeys each year, with prices ranging from 400 to 1000 euros depending on the animal.
A Legacy of Passion and Sustainability
The Montebaducco farm represents an excellence not only for its size but also for its innovative and sustainable approach. Each donkey is raised using natural methods, following the rhythm of nature and respecting the surrounding environment. This project, born from the dream of a man in love with simplicity and tradition, is now a model of sustainability and biodiversity.
Giuseppe Borghi has managed to transform a passion into a mission, demonstrating how an idea that seemed foolish could become a success story. And as the donkeys of Montebaducco continue to grow and thrive, Giuseppe’s legacy, fueled by the same perseverance that characterizes these animals, remains an example of how passion and respect for nature can change the world.

The Territory
Montebaducco is located in Quattro Castella, an area that, besides its fame for donkey farming, is also known for its proximity to the historic Rocca di Canossa, an ancient stronghold of Matilda of Canossa. A place steeped in history, further enriching the charm of this territory.

The Rocca and Matilda of Canossa
The Rocca di Canossa, situated on the Reggian hills a few kilometers from Quattro Castella, is one of the most important fortresses in Italian medieval history. Built in the 11th century, it was the center of power for the renowned Countess Matilda of Canossa (1046-1115), one of the most influential women of medieval Europe.
Matilda is known for her crucial role in the conflict between the Papacy and the Empire during the so-called “Investiture Controversy.” The fortress was the scene of an emblematic historical episode in 1077 when Emperor Henry IV went to Canossa to seek forgiveness from Pope Gregory VII, giving rise to the famous “humiliation of Canossa.”
Matilda’s figure, devoted to the Church and an ally of the Papacy, profoundly marked Italian medieval history, and her influence is still reflected today in the surrounding landscape, which bears the mark of her presence and power.

Quattro Castella, where the Montebaducco donkey farm is located, is an integral part of this rich territory, and each year it hosts a captivating historical reenactment dedicated to Matilda of Canossa, attracting visitors from all over the world.
