La Scuola di Chiappera

The School of Chiappera: One Year After Closure

Almost a year after the closure of the School of Chiappera, we revisit the story of a place that transformed tourists into temporary residents, leaving an indelible mark on the Maira Valley.

The regret over the loss of this unique refuge in the Maira Valley continues to resonate. Inaugurated in 2014, the School represented an innovative model of diffused hospitality, where tourists and visitors became an integral part of the mountain community, staying in the welcoming rooms of the structure or in the traditional houses of the village.

The School was a true masterpiece of recovery and natural architecture, a place where elegance and rusticity blended into a warm and romantic mix. Every detail, from the choice of materials to the layout of spaces, was designed to harmonize with the surrounding landscape, creating a welcoming and authentic atmosphere.

With its restaurant serving traditional dishes and communal spaces dedicated to cultural events and social activities, the School successfully attracted hikers and mountain lovers, offering an ideal starting point for exploring the trails and natural beauty of the valley. The philosophy of sustainable tourism, which promoted a deep respect for the environment, made this establishment a beacon of hope for an alternative development model.

Unfortunately, despite the strong bond with the community and the success of many initiatives, the managers, Stefano and Pierpaolo, faced personal and managerial challenges, leading to the decision to close the doors of the School. Pierpaolo’s impending retirement and the growing difficulties marked the end of a chapter that touched the hearts of many, leaving a difficult void to fill.

Today, nearly a year later, the memory of the School of Chiappera lives on in the stories of those who frequented it. Its legacy continues to inspire reflection on the value of more conscious and respectful tourism towards local communities, a lesson that remains alive among the residents of the Maira Valley and its devoted visitors.

The Maira Valley

The Maira Valley, located in the heart of the Cozie Alps in Piedmont, is one of Italy’s most fascinating and lesser-known valleys. Characterized by breathtaking landscapes, the valley is flanked by imposing mountain peaks, ancient forests, and picturesque mountain villages, many of which preserve traditional architecture and the authentic atmosphere of alpine communities. This territory offers a perfect balance between natural beauty and local culture, making it an ideal place for nature lovers and trekkers.

One of the peculiarities of the Maira Valley is its strong cultural identity, with a local language, “Occitan,” still spoken in some villages, representing a unique heritage to be preserved. The valley is also famous for its gastronomic products, including cheeses and meat specialties that reflect the agricultural and pastoral traditions of the region.

Moreover, the Maira Valley is a paradise for hikers, with a vast network of trails winding through enchanting landscapes, passing by alpine lakes and lush woods. The outdoor activities available, from summer hiking to winter skiing, attract visitors from all over the world, contributing to sustainable and environmentally respectful tourism.
